VERDANT ELEGANCE
A Spanish-Style Kitchen With Modern Function
In Los Altos Hills, Pacific Doorcraft partnered with Hammerschmidt Construction on a kitchen remodel in a 1920s Spanish-style home. The house began as a weekend ranch retreat for San Francisco families and was extensively remodeled in 1960. The goal was to turn its 1960s kitchen into a space that looks like it belonged to the original house while offering every modern convenience.
The Kitchen
The custom kitchen cabinetry was proportioned to the room, including the sloped ceiling, where small changes in depth and height keep every cabinet usable. Cabinets under the island overhang are built to different depths, and very thin cabinets put the space beside the refrigerator to work. Scribe details stay clean from the wide gap at the top to the tight fit at the bottom. Floating shelves sit flush to the wall, with a small notch at the back that holds plates securely in earthquake country.

Respecting the Home's Original Character
A beam made from scratch replicates the original beam in the home's walkway, carrying the Spanish architecture into the kitchen. Seeded glass in the upper cabinets stays true to the era of the house. Plaster-style walls and wrought-iron trim and fixtures, repeated throughout the home, make the new kitchen feel seamless with the rest of the house.
Storage Built Around the Cook
Beside the range, a handcrafted spice drawer and a custom pull-out keep cooking oils, vinegars and utensils within reach. The pull-out was sized to the homeowner's own bottles. Door-style pull-outs give the look of a cabinet door with the efficiency of a drawer, and their shelves adjust up and down. The pantry closes behind a shaker-style pocket door with soft-action hardware that mirrors the cabinetry.
Modern Convenience, Original Feel
Storage for trays, pantry items and household goods is built into the design, so the kitchen works hard every day. From the beam to the glass-front cabinets, each detail keeps that function looking like part of an old Spanish house.
A True Collaboration
This kitchen came together through close work between the homeowners, Hammerschmidt Construction and Pacific Doorcraft. Lynn Hammerschmidt called the project "a great partnership." Our role was to deliver cabinetry and doors that respect the home's history while meeting the needs of a modern kitchen.
